Modern Perms at West 5th Street's Premier Salon
Located at the corner of West 5th Street and Pressler, serving Downtown Austin, Old West Austin & Surrounding Areas.
We create the curls and waves of your dreams with modern perm technology. Whether you have straight hair, an uneven curl pattern or just want a different curl pattern than you were born with, we got you.
These aren't your grandmother's perms. They are “softer” with less harsh chemicals and can be customized for a variety of looks, from soft beach waves and other soft open curl looks to tight coils. We can even use our perms to tame a cowlick. We use CurlCult® perms. Here’s what makes them different:
✅ Less damage to your hair due to less harsh chemicals than traditional perms. This is a “softer” perm than most, yielding softer results that last from 3-6 months.
✅ Vegan formula, infused with pea protein to protect the hair while delivering long lasting curls and waves.
✅ Less offensive smell
✅ Easy to style, touchable results
See the FAQ below for answers to your questions.
All perms require a 30 min, complimentary consultation on a day prior to your service. This can be over the phone if you live out of town. What should you expect in the consultation?
a review of your hair history to make sure you’re a good candidate
discussion of your curl goals
a review of pre and after care
a price/time quote

Modern Perm FAQ
-
Curl Cult is a new texture treatment that can create or reform curls or waves—without the damage. Formulated with cysteine and cysteamine amino acids, it works by restructuring the shape of the hair into a defined curl or wave pattern. This vegan, pea protein–infused solution is kind to both your hair and the planet. Fewer steps and a softer scent mean a more comfortable salon experience—and effortless, touchable texture that lasts.
-
This service will create natural looking curl looks due to how it is wrapped, softened and set. Looks created by a curling iron or flat iron (i.e. wrap curls), however, will be easier to achieve and last longer because it is supported by a Curl Cult treatment. Find pictures of curls you love and curls you don’t to share with your practitioner so you both know what direction to go in.
-
The results are best on virgin (not colored / bleached / highlighted / or chemically altered) hair. In most cases we can safely service colored or highlighted hair up to 20 volume in a foil, or 30 volume open air bleach as well as previously permed hair. If you are already experiencing breakage you should not get a Curl Cult service. If you have any doubt, ask your practitioner to first start with a test strand
-
From 3 to 6 months depending on your hair and the type (custom formulation) of perm you want.
-
If you are losing a lot of length the majority of the cut can happen before the service. If your stylist is simply adjusting the shape to work with your new texture we suggest waiting to cut your hair until after the service. The right cut for curly hair is imperative for the best results and layers will really make your new texture pop!.
-
For the best results, wait two weeks after your Curl Cult texture treatment before getting any color services. Why? Because perming first helps preserve the health of your hair—and it may gently lift any existing color by about half to one full level. That’s why we always recommend perming before coloring to ensure your final look is vibrant, even, and long-lasting.
-
You must wait 48 hours after your service before washing your hair, swimming, sweating profusely, or strongly securing your hair back. If hair looks or feels flat, you may run your hands under water and scrunch into hair to refresh, or spray with Curl Cult Magic Spell. Expect the treatment to ‘settle in” after the first wash (i.e. loosen a bit).
-
We do require you to get a separate consultation prior to the service for best results and so we can schedule enough time.
-
Getting this service over a keratin treatment can result in less than optimal results. We recommend a test strand first before proceeding with the entire service. This service should not be done over previously relaxed hair or hair colored with henna.
-
When done correctly, and on hair that can take it, NO. This is one of the reasons we require a consultation; to make sure you’re hair can receive the service without damaging it.
The Curl Cult formula is extra safe with PisumProtex™ technology so that we can be kinder to the hair, but we want to be really sure your hair is in shape to receive it.Our perms are “softer” and easier on the hair than traditional perms, with less harsh chemicals and less smell. Since this is a chemical service like color, however, it would be disingenuous to say there is no change to the texture or feel of the hair. With a perm, you are changing hair texture by default, but our perms don’t produce the kind of radical change and coarse feel that old school perms do with their with powerful chemicals.
-
Time is determined on an individual basis during the consultation and depends on hair length, type, and desired outcome. It can take as little as 90-minute for the IT Wave or partial service or up to 3 hours for curl reformation service.

A T-shirt you’re willing to get wet is perfect. Don’t wear a shirt with a collar or anything else that can’t get water on it. Sometimes (not often) your shirt may get wet.
-
Wash and condition with professional, moisture rich curl supportive products.
Only use a microfiber or 100% cotton towel on your hair to scrunch and or wrap up. Seriously this is worth it, you will have way better curl results.
Get a silk or satin pillowcase for less frizz and breakage.
Get a collapsible universal diffuser for your blow dryer when you want more volume, or need to have your hair dry quicker than air drying.
Air drying is going to be your best bet for styling.

Don’t you dare wash that hair for the first 48 hours (see Legally Blonde).
NO hard clips or ponytails for the first 48 hours.
Don’t wash your hair too often, reactivate curls with water the next day and scrunch in leave-in conditioner or curl cream depending on what your hair needs.
